Enjoy it now, or cellar for a few more years. No need to decant before serving. The Clüver family are South African wine pioneers. They set up shop in the Elgin Valley approximately 120 years ago, and are now entering their fourth generation of wine-makers. Four of the five Clüver siblings are involved with the winery to some degree, inheriting the business from their parents, Paul and Songvei. Elgin Valley is a cool climate region, specifically recognised for the quality of its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also home to Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc vines. The Clüver’s territory benefits from a lengthened ripening period. This is due to several cooling factors, including the nearby ocean, which adds a natural freshness and complexity to their stunning range of wines. This is a great choice for those who want to taste a model example of South African Chardonnay. Its nose bursts with fresh citrus scents, and warm hints of brioche. The soils of Elgin Valley are composed of the famous Bokkeveld Shale, which offers a distinct mineral edge to the wines made here. On the palate, you’ll discover notes of orange peel, citrus blossom and vanilla, all underpinned by bright acidity. This wine is a versatile food pairing, with some emphasis on seafood. You can also consider pairing it with creamy pasta or a lean, gamey bird.
