The production of liqueurs has always been an important part of Poli Distillerie activities from the very beginning. On the company headed paper in 1930 Fabbrica liquori came even before Distilleria Acquavite. Of the many liqueurs produced the lions share went to Sviwovitz di Prugna, a dry liqueur based on plum distillate. The name Sliwovitz was used until 1938, when it began to indicate exclusively plum distillates produced in Eastern Europe. A sweet liqueur was then created in its place, simply called Elisir Prugna, from an infusion of pure plum juice.

The production of a Reserve, as we have been taught by Franco Biondi Santi, is part of the tradition of Brunello di Montalcino, more than the cru or single-vineyard wines. Given that Brunello is an extremely important wine, when I decide to make a Reserve I always have to be sure that what I have is outstanding, absolutely fabulous: the best Brunello in an exceptional year, one of those that occur about three times in each decade. A Reserve must also be seen as a Brunello with a very long cellar-life, a wine capable of ageing for decades. Consequently, a young Brunello Reserve is always much more tannic and characterised by greater acidity, requiring a certain number of years of bottle-ageing.

EXTRA: Unexpected, out of the ordinary. As part of our ongoing, obsessive pursuit of the deepest spirit of Val delle Cortis Sangiovese grape, in certain special and important years we make a small selection of a few barrels where the Riserva matures. This wine is left to lie pea-cefully for one year longer than the Riserva itself (for a total of 36 months). It follows its own captivating and unusual path, and is bottled without filtration. Over the next few years the Extra selection will increasingly be made from our new cru vineyard, La Malpensata. Our goal is not to create a deliberately powerful, robust, opulent wine. Quite the opposite. We aim to bottle the quintessence of the Sangiovese grape grown in our vineyards, its highest possi-ble expression of elegance, smoothness and rich body.

Feudo di Mezzo as a contrada is very vaste and therefore I prefer to separate the bottom part (sottana) from the upper part (soprana or Porcaria). Although lower in the valley floor where one would expect bigger wines, the wines are of an unusual elegance which characterizes this area. Relatively deep soil which, in humid vintages can create some problems although the well ventilated site helps to get ripeness. Burgundian elegance and roundness, even in hot vintages makes this a special wine with great finesse.
